*Medical Imaging
The cost of a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) is made up of two parts:
-
The speech pathologist fee listed above, payable to this practice, which covers conducting the assessment, the detailed analysis of your images, and a detailed report sent to the health professionals involved in your care.
-
The medical imaging fee, which is charged separately by the imaging provider and is paid to them on the day of your appointment.

Please see the total cost breakdown for VFSS below:
Category | Speech Pathology Fee | Medical Imaging Fee | Medicare Rebate (on imaging) | Total Out-of-Pocket Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Standard fee | $290 | $367.75 | $87.75 | $570 |
Concession or Health Care Card holders | $290 | $212.75 | $87.75 | $415 |
Imaging fees are correct as at Jan 2026. Please contact them directly for fee details or concession eligibility.
If you have a Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDMP) in place with your GP, an additional Medicare rebate can be claimed against the speech pathology fee, further reducing your total out-of-pocket cost by $61.80.
Medicare - Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDMP) with GP
You may be eligible for Medicare rebates for speech pathology services under a Chronic Disease Management Plan organised by your GP. This plan must be in place before your appointment. More information about this is available here.
-
After payment is received, we can submit your Medicare claim on your behalf. The current rebate is $61.80 per session, or more if you have reached the Medicare Safety Net.
-
Rebates are paid directly into your nominated bank account, please ensure your details are up to date with Medicare.
-
Medicare rebates cannot be claimed with Private Health Insurance for the same service.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
Swallow Science Melbourne is not NDIS registered. An invoice can be generated for self-managed and plan managed packages. Please note, it is unlikely that your plan will fund the cost of diagnostic imaging we undertake (VFSS/FEES) - NDIA have stated that the health system is responsible for any tests to diagnose dysphagia.
